One of the most common complaints computer users have with their computers is slow response time. Everyone wants to get an immediate answer to their keystrokes rather than waiting seconds or even minutes watching the spinning wheel. However, there are a number of common issues that will cause your computer to respond slowly.

1. Too many users on a network. If you have your computer system set up as a wireless network, you may experience slower response times as more users log in. Correct this by limiting the number of family members who can log on at one time or by setting up two separate networks.

2. A large number of junk and temporary files. Every time you use your computer to access information, it creates temporary files to store that information while you are using it. Over time, these files accumulate and cause your response time to get slower and slower. Make sure to get rid of these files on a regular basis. You'll also want to empty your trash bin periodically. Although this is the first step in getting rid of old pictures and files, they are still taking up memory space until you empty that bin.

3. Spyware and malware. Even the most conscientious computer user can find they have spyware or, worse, malware installed on their computer. These potentially harmful, unwanted files can come with downloads, toolbars, and wallpapers. Since remnants of these files can be tricky to remove, it's a good idea to enlist the aid of a computer technician to get rid of spyware or malware.

4. Wallpapers and other accessories that take a lot of memory. While wallpapers and accessories like animated cursors and personalized icons are fun, both can eat up a lot of your computer's memory, slowing down your response time.

5. Too many programs. Loading lots of program onto your hard drive is another reason your computer response time may not be as quick as you'd like. Remember how fast your computer responded when you first took it out of the box? The more programs you download, the slower your computer will likely be, especially if they are large programs.

If you find that your computer's response is getting slower and slower, despite your best efforts to correct the problem, it's time to call in a computer specialist like Automated Office Systems. A computer tech can get to the root of your slow response time and get your computer back up to speed.
